I'm 64 years old, retired, and living in the Texas Hill Country. I've been fascinated with football since I was six years old — the momentum swings, the matchups, the injuries, the statistics, and exactly how each variable shifts the probability of who walks off that field with a win.

I went offshore for the first time in 1981 as a roustabout with my dominant right hand in a cast up to my elbow, and worked my way up over 17 years to earn my United States Coast Guard Official Offshore Installation Manager License. I then began my Directional Drilling career. I spent my career in an industry where your analysis and intuitive actions either hold up under pressure or they don't. We were caught offshore during a hurricane. Twice. And had to ride them out. The Coast Guard couldn't get out to rescue us. We went down in a helicopter once as well.
In 1998 I found out I'd been born with polycystic kidney disease and never knew it. Twelve years of disability followed. In 2009 I had a bilateral nephrectomy and kidney transplant - my old kidneys weighed 6 pounds each. My new one weighed 11 ounces, like a normal kidney should. My angel live kidney donor — a friend I rode bulls with in high school — unselfishly gave me the gift of life without a second thought.

After a lengthy recovery, I went back to work Directional Drilling.
